Wine details:

Contraste 2017, Douro

Rita Marques abandoned Mechanical Engineering to focus on her vocation - wine and the land. After qualifying as a winemaker, Rita travelled to France, California, South Africa & New Zealand to learn from and work with some of the most influential wine-makers in the world. She returned to Portugal to take over her Mother’s vineyards in the Douro Superior. Rita is not only a special wine-maker, she is an inspiring leader for her dynamic team. Rita has always farmed the vineyards organically and is certified organic from the 2019 vintage. This is a rich, powerful yet balanced red with 70% of the blend aged for 18 months in oak. Multi-layered and complex with blackberry, smoke, violet, dark chocolate and spice, it is a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca & Touriga Nacional.

Sotsas Bianco

Federico Simoni is still a young man but he already has 12 vintages behind him. And he took on a huge challenge when he decided to start his own project in his twenties at Maso Cantanghel. This small boutique winery and high mountain valley vineyard, located at 460m, requires absolute focus and commitment all year round. And Federico applies that dedication to every vintage. All the plots are certified organic and Federico only makes around 3,000 bottles of this terrific Sotsas Bianco each year. A blend of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc fermented in oak barrels. Stone fruit, spicy notes with toast and hazelnut all combine in a rich and textured wine.

Can Leandro, Panxut

In 2013, and still in his 20’s, Gabriel Sanchis decided to revive his Grandfather Leandro’s vineyards near Ontinyent, inland of Valencia. Meaning the ‘House of Leandro’, the vineyards were neglected in the 1950’s and 1960’s as people left the land to work in the local burgeoning textile industry. Gabriel makes vibrant, authentic, low intervention wines based on rare local grape varieties like Merseguera and Bonicaire. Panxut, is a single vineyard wine made from old vine Bonicaire. Remarkably fresh with red and blue fruit, liquorice and spice. This is a wine with a lot of energy that will appeal to lovers of Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir.

Valori Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Bio

Luigi Valori has produced wine on his estate in Abruzzo since 1996. The wines are complex and the enthusiasm expended is second to none. But you’d expect nothing less from a man with such as varied life before wine. Tropical botanist, theologian and ex-professional Serie A footballer with Ascoli, Luigi can draw upon three careers worth of life experience.

The estate has produced Organically Certified wines since the 2013 vintage.

This is a vibrant, complex Montepulciano. Dark cherries, violets, tobacco and wild herbs. Food friendly, it pairs well with lamb and tomato based pasta dishes.

La Ganghija, Barbaresco

Previous generations of the Rapalino family used to sell their grapes to large producers in the Alba area. Enzo Rapalino changed the destiny of his family's vineyards when he decided to qualify as a winemaker and built a winery in 2004. He hasn’t looked back since, winning lots of awards and exporting his fragrant and complex Nebbiolo-based wines to multiple countries. We met him first in 2010 and we can enthusiastically attest to the qualities of the man and the wines. This Barbaresco is 100% Nebbiolo, made from 45 year old vines. The grapes are usually hand-picked in October and vinified in stainless steel with a long gentle maceration. Aged for 24 months in French oak and large Slavonian oak casks, the wine has dark cherry notes, licorice, touches of lifted violet, wild herbs and tobacco notes.

Olianas Vermentino

Stefano Casadei spent almost a decade in Georgia to perfect winemaking in amphorae. They farm organically with a process they call bio-integrale which involves integrating with nature – horses instead of mechanization, farm animals on the land and only natural herbicides and fertilizers. In the winery natural materials with partial or total fermentation in clay amphorae. All fermentations are spontaneous and there is little or no sulphur added at bottling. This wine, 100% Vermentino takes a different approach. Firstly there are 2 harvests – the earlier harvest has more acidity and the later has rounder flavours resulting in a very balanced wine. And second, 30% of the wine is aged in large oak. Round and generous on the palate with stone fruit, pink grapefruit and spicy fennel and jasmine with a long fresh finish.
